August is half over, autumn is just around the corner and we’ve got some extra-odd oddities down here at the shop. We’ve also acquired some very cool vintage magic items that look awesome on the shelves. We’re gearing up for fall and Halloween, putting in orders for creepy Bicycle decks, eerie mentalism routines and creepy crawly novelties. It may still be in the 90s outside, but we’re anticipating chilly weather and chilling merchandise. Bring on fall!
Well here it is Spring at last, and we’ve been busy as bees (pardon the cheese) with all the spring breakers of all ages coming in to see a little magic, buy some tricks or add some strange and bizarre items to their oddity collections. If you haven’t experienced the creepy wonders of the Shrunken Heads of Bora Bora and their weeeeird powers of prediction, come on in and ask for a demo from Matt or myself. But the powers of the heads are not for the faint of heart so beware… On a lighter note we’ve got lots of new magic and vintage pieces so come on in and check it all out. And don’t forget to put a penny in the vintage “Ask Swami” machine and see what the future has in store for you this spring!
Here it is February and we’ve got some fun Valentine’s Day action going down at the shop – people know we’re a magic shop, but a lot of people don’t realize we also sell unique gifts and jewelry created by some of the most talented local artists. How about a snakeskin or tarantula leg pendant by Clever Kim’s Curios for our oddity lovers? – she makes her delightfully oddball jewelry with skins and appendages shed by her pet snakes and spiders. We also have lots of magic-themed pendants, paintings and shadowboxes, not to mention all the cool MAGIC – appearing bouquets and card tricks to amaze and astound your sweetie. Stop by this month and see us — Max is always up for showing off his newest tricks, and don’t forget to say Hello to our resident shop dog Billie Baloney.
5…4…3…2…1… and it’s a Happy New Year of Magic here at Mago’s! The Christmas season was very good to us – so many old and new friends came through the door ! The magic show we hosted at the Denver Puppet Theater was a smashing success despite the cold and snow – the audience was thoroughly baffled and amazed by guest magicians Tam Vo and Lauro Castillo. What a night! Many of our favorite oddities found new homes for the holidays – our beloved Fiji Mermaid, The Alligator Man, several bottled Octopuses, and a mink skull in a vintage glass box (sung to the tune of “12 days of Christmas”). But we have acquired three new gorgeous shrunken heads, so when you visit make sure to ask to see the “Power of the Heads” trick. We are looking forward to the new year and several projects- cleaning the shop, painting the west wall, and acquiring a new Fiji mermaid just to name a few. We also plan to continue carrying the latest magic and oddest oddities, so stop by in January and see what’s new!
The pumpkins have been smashed, the last of the leaves are changing color, and we’ve got some cool and creepy oddities and curiosities adorning our shelves just in time for the pre-holiday season! Come on down and see…Octopuses in jars! Skulls behind glass! Zombie Teeth! The polar piranha and shrunken head sideshow gaffs are back from their tour of the country with the Circus Emporium, and there’s magic galore on the shelves and on the way. Come down and check out some of the new stage picks — The Fire Book, which bursts into flame in the magician’s hands, The Skeleton and the Haunted House, a fun stage piece, and The Clarity Box — a card routine you will not believe. And don’t miss Small Business Saturday November 28th, we’ll be making deals and staying open late.
Well here it is October and the season of ghosts and goblins is upon us. The Magic Shop moved from the Golden Triangle to the Highlands and we couldn’t be happier with our new digs – more free parking for our customers, no construction next door, and a new beginning in North Denver. I’ve decked out the big picture window for Halloween, and our October 1st Friday art and magic show was a smash hit. We’ve got some creeeeepy new merchandise for the Halloween season — The Fire Book- which bursts into flame at the magician’s command, The Skeleton and the Haunted House Stage Illusion – in which a skeleton magically dis-assembles and re-assembles himself, and a gorgeously illustrated Dia De Los Muertos Bicycle card deck. Also – skull earrings, eerie magic potion bottles, spider-web bags, tombstone necklaces and a new batch of bottled octopuses for our oddity-loving friends. Come on down and check out the Halloween Hullabaloo!
September finds us in our new, improved magic shop! I’ve been seeing hints of fall in the changing leaves and chillier nights. We are excited about our new location in the North Denver Highlands area. We said farewell to the old storefront on Cherokee Row on Sept 1st, and opened our new space Sept 2nd. The magic posters are on the walls, the magic is back on the shelves, the Oddities in their cases, and we’ve got some great new illusions — “Triage” by Danny Weiser, ”Mental Mysteries” by E.R. Hutchison, and the awesome “Bob’s Box” by Bob Swaddling. And we’ve upped the Oddity ante with a line of preserved specimens – Octopuses, Bugs, and Reptiles….Oh My! Make sure to attend our next FREE 1st Friday Event in the new shop — Tricks Treats and Halloween Hijinx - Closeup magic, Fortune Telling, Spirit Conjuring, Complimentary Treats. Happy Fall !
Well, here it is June and tomorrow is the first day of summer. We’re gearing up for a new season here at the shop, getting ready to do some interior painting, bring in new magic items, up the oddity ante, and keep hunting the back roads and out-of-the-way places for unique and unusual vintage and antique curiosities. We have a new visitor to Mago’s Cabinet of Curiosities to join The Fiji Mermaid, the Polar Piranha, and the Shrunken Head…THE MONKEY’S PAW! You know the old classic horror story by W.W. Jacobs…the monkey’s paw grants three wishes to an old couple – with horrifying results (of course – this was a horror story after all). Our Monkey’s Paw resides safely behind glass ready to grant it’s new owner three wishes…but as the old saying goes…”Be Careful What You Wish For…You May Get It”! Our First Friday Magic Show with Gene Gordon was an amazing night of magic and sleight-of-hand, which is Gene’s specialty. As a thunderstorm raged outside, we were cozy and warm inside enjoying the talents of one of our favorite magicians. Note: There will be no 1st Friday Magic Show in July, as it’s 4th of July Weekend. In the meantime, enjoy the launching of summer – season of festivals, backyard BBQs, and ….MAGIC!
Well here it is May and like magic it’s officially SPRING ! I recently returned from a cross-country trek visiting family in Minnesota and shopping for oddities with our faithful Pointer/Border collie Billie Baloney, while Max held down the fort here at the shop. I came back with some doozies — Taxidermy! Weird Anatomy ! Antique Glass Doll Eyes ! Vintage Skeleton Bank – he gobbles coins while his eyes pop out in greedy delight… EEEEK! Come on down and check out the weird and wonderful wares for spring. And talk about cool new magic — Houdini Thumb Cuffs Escape, Fire Wallet by Trickmaster, Criss Angel Mental Freak…and lots more. We’re so excited about our 1st Friday show with renowned Paranormal Illusionist Aiden Sinclair, opener Saia Marz, and art by Ian Gray. This will be one freakalicious triple threat, so don’t miss it!
Well here it is Magic March and spring is definitely in the air – (or under the snow) digging it’s way out slooowly but surely. We’ve got an exciting First Friday show coming up this week – the CIRCUS EMPORIUM SIDESHOW ROAD SHOW! March 6th 7:30pm at the shop – 313 W 11th Ave Denver. The shop is decked out with sideshow oddities, art and curious wares – step right up to see the POLAR PIRANHA ! RODEO CHICKEN ! KING TUT’S SARCOPHAGUS! PREHISTORIC BONE FISH ! ALLIGATOR MAN ! FIJI MERMAID ! and much more… We’ve also got some fun new magic - The Crummy Cookie Trick, which changes pennies to dimes, vanishes in thin air, and restores itself whole after being bitten….this one is deeelicious. And if you’re pining for a little spring to banish the snow blues our new Appearing Flower is just the ticket – no watering required. The snow may be a-flyin and Puskatawney Phil snuggled back in his den, but the shop is cozy and warm and Max is ready to show off his stuff so come out of the cold and into the magic…!
