OK so here it is November, and Mago’s Magic Shoppe is gearing up for Christmas….yeah, yeah I miss the old days when the Christmas season didn’t start until after Thanksgiving too, but when you’re in the retail world sometimes you have to sell our soul to the retail devil.  I will wait to decorate the window for Christmas however until after Turkey Day.  We’ve got three big orders coming in preparation for the upcoming holidays, Criss Angel Mind Freak magic kits,  Bag for Life (Matt’s favorite new illusion — it’s amaaazing!), Dean Dill’s Blizzard, Inception, Bill to Lemon and lots lots more!  And  now that Night of the Living Dead has closed (my annual show at the Bug Theater), I’m back on the hunt for oddities – prowling estate sales, junk shops and out of the way places for weird and wonderful merchandise.  And watch for lots of new pieces of decopaged and repurposed art, locally made jewelry, paintings, prints, dioramas, terrariums, etc.   Tis the season to create art ! WOOT! And don’t miss our First Friday Art & Magic show starring local legend Gene Gordon, with art by Cory and Jess Godnai, Max Mago, and Robbielee Coleman.

Can’t believe it’s mid-October already, and I haven’t carved a single pumpkin !  So far October has been creep-ariffic here at the shop, with our resident ghost “Mathias” on hand to chat with customers, and our super-cool new SWAMI FORTUNE TELLER MACHINE (vintage 1950s – featured on a “Twilight Zone” episode starring none other than a young William Shatner).  Swami is busy dolling out fortunes and answering customers’ burning questions, and our brand new shop resident THE FIJI MERMAID has moved into our large glass cabinet, formerly occupied by the ALIEN SKULL.  Matt and I are crazy busy between the shop and my annual production of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, a stage adaptation of George Romero’s 1968 classic, presented by The Bug Theatre (www.bugtheatre.org).  Anyhoo, HAPPY OCTOBER, and come on down to the shop to see what’s shakin’, rattlin’, and rollin for Halloween.  We’ve got gorgeous new merch from our resident artists– necklaces with tiny tombstones and zombies in tiny glass tubes, teeny zombie dioramas, skull earrings, zombie celebrity prints, creepy cemetery photos…..you’ve just gotta see it all !  Come on down….if you DARE……

Autumn is peeking around the corner and Max and I are gearing up for my favorite season of the year — the HALLOWEEN SEASON !  We plan to deck out the magic shop in true Halloween style.  There are all kinds of creepy art-projects-in-progress lurking in the back room – a papier mache sarcophagus, a Fiji Mermaid waiting for her fangs, a half-wrapped mummy, and gobs of orange and black crepe paper.  And we can’t wait for our next 1st Friday Free Magic Show — Olde Tyme Seance and Spooky Tricks, Fri Oct 3rd at 7pm.  Shrunken Heads…Disembodied Hands…Ghosts and Goblins and Ghouls Oh My!  We’ve added an eeerie new effect to our repertoire — The Haunted Doll (doll and DVD included) ! For sale in-shop only, this one scared me silly the first time I saw it.  So get a witch’s shawl on, a roof that you can crawl on, we’re gonna make a call on…Mago’s Magic Shoppe ! (sung to the tune of “The Adams Family”).

Magical, Mystical May

Posted by Kris & Max     Category: Uncategorized

Well here it is May, and Denver got dumped on with about 4″ of snow !  Other than that, spring is shaping up here at the shop.  And speaking of Spring, check out our newest magic accessory/novelty, the Spring Wand !  Show a perfectly normal looking want to your spectator, then hand it to them and….it springs, it sproings, it bends, it boings!  This is definitely one of Max’s favorite new items, he can’t put it down.  We’ve also got a super-cool new Metal Bending DVD, new card tricks, and some new tenants in the Museum of Oddities.  In early May we had Swami Bill and his Original FLEA CIRCUS at the shop for our 1st Friday show, and it was a big hit — so many folks showed up we had to do two shows to accommodate the crowd.  What a blast!

April (snow) Showers…

Posted by Kris & Max     Category: Uncategorized

Well here it is April already, and spring has sprung! (sort of ).  Despite the early spring snow and chill, things are warming up at the shop and we’ve got some truly weird and wonderful new merchandise.   On the magic end, we have the infamous MIND BALL ! – a cool and magical take on the old magic 8 ball.  We also have Sudden Deck 3, and Disposable Deck — both professional-level routines producing and vanishing entire decks of cards.  And then there’s the Clarity Box — which must be seen to be believed, so come on down and check out all the cool new merchandise.  Our meet and greet with master magician Jeff McBride was a blast — what a cool guy!  He even bought some of my art, which was an honor and a privilege.  Mr McBride has become our newest fan, and we look forward to the day when we can zip out to Vegas and pay him a visit.  FYI May 3rd -4th we will be manning a booth at the Mini Maker’s Fair at the National Western Complex so the shop will be closed while we sell our wares elsewhere.   And, we’ve got some great April Fool’s Day jokes left — Floating eyeballs!  Rattlesnake Eggs!  Creepy Rubber Hands! (ya can’t have enough of those). Woot!

In Like a Lion…!

Well here it is March, the month my mother used to call “kite flying month”, and we’ve had enough wind in Denver to fly a dozen kits. Crazy!  Spring is on the way, St Patty’s Day has come and gone,  but Matt’s got a great trick involving shamrocks, so come on down to the shop and ask for a demo.  We’ve got lots of cool new merchandise, including the infamous Mind Ball,  the astounding Clarity Box, and Sudden Deck 3.  Matt can tell you all about these new pro-level routines.   I’ve been busy making new oddities,  come on down and check out my Easter Island collection, as well as my mini-dioramas featuring dinosaurs, whales, and aliens.   Our next 1st Friday event is scheduled for April 4th at 7pm at the shop – Magician’s Open Mike Night, all levels and ages welcome.

February — Love and Magic

Posted by Kris & Max     Category: Uncategorized

Oh it’s still cold here in Denver, but we certainly don’t have it as bad as some areas of the country.  But hey — the shop is nice and warm, there’s free magic, and lots of cool and unusual wares to peruse.  Check out my new line of Easter Island art in the Oddities section, and Matt’s new favorite trick, Coin Thru Glass (it’s a gas).  Our next 1st Friday event will be Fri march 7th, and our own resident magician, Sir Max Mago, will be performing !  We’re excited about this show cuz Matt has gotten in a lot of closeup magic for customers at the shop, but this will give him a chance to perform a real show in our own shop.  There will be complimentary snacks as always, and so far our First Friday events have been a hit –Dave Neighbors’ parlor act was awesome, and we had a few guest magicians join him on our humble stage.  Josh Lamb did some rope magic, and Max did a few tricks.  So come on down March 7th and have a little food, a little magic, and lots of fun.  This month we also feature the art of amazing local artist Daniel Lowenstein — come on in and check out his work.   Cheers !
